Specialist Additional Support Needs schools which operate independently would be exempt.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Greens co-leader Ross Greer says the proposal is part of a package of measures being introduced by the party to ensure that the \u201csuper wealthy\u201d and big business \u201cstart paying their fair share towards building a fairer, greener Scotland.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">However, a  number of families with children at fee-paying schools do not even pay the higher rate of income tax.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The move would also be an additional burden on parents and the institutions after the UK Labour Government imposed VAT on private school education and boarding fees, from 1 January 1 last year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Private schools say the move has forced them to raise fees while families have withdrawn their children, putting more pressure on state schools. <\/p>\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Mr Greer said: \u201cElite private schools are one of the most obvious ways through which the super-rich keep hold of their power and privilege. <\/p>\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cThey act as pipelines into some of the most powerful positions and industries in our country, forming exclusive networks amongst a privileged few.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cA few years ago we quite rightly removed the tax cut they got for being \u2018charities\u2019. That\u2019s because we recognised that they are not just schools, they are profitable businesses and they should be treated as such. <\/p>\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cWith public services under such huge pressure but the richest still getting richer, it\u2019s time to go further.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cThe Scottish Greens\u2019 Private School Tax would ensure that these businesses pay their fair share.
