Former Mediahuis Ireland boss Peter Vandermeersch fell victim to AI hallucinations despite his years of experience in journalism

This week, one of Ireland’s most senior media figures was suspended for using artificial intelligence (AI) that made up quotes that were then used in articles and newsletter posts.
In his own written account of what happened, former Mediahuis Ireland boss Peter Vandermeersch said that tools such as ChatGPT lulled him with “irresistible” quotes to support the think pieces he was researching for his Press And Democracy blog, which included, ironically, opinion columns on the threat that AI poses to truth and journalism.
