Sky’s war on dodgy boxes: ‘A member of the family who is a garda has one – half the station has them’

Now that it has contact details for many users, the media giant has promised legal action. But what form will the clampdown take and will it act as a deterrent?

TV companies can wring their hands in indignation all they like, but it seems unlikely that any sense of guilt will deter the Irish public from using dodgy boxes.

Judging by conversations with users of the illegal streaming devices and posts on online discussion forums, the overwhelming view is that firing up the dodgy box to watch bootlegged versions of Sky’s Premier League football matches or the latest HBO Max drama The Pitt is a victimless crime.
