We have never had so much money sloshing about doing nothing. Almost €162bn (the same as our entire GNP in 2005) is sitting in deposit accounts, credit unions and state savings products.
Even with inflation back to under 2pc, that money is simply being chewed up, which begs two questions: why are we saving so much and what is it for?
