‘Security is an amazing thing’ – Why a nice job in the civil service has become the new cool

Private sector workers are flocking to the public sector in a quest for a better work/life balance and greater financial security

Donal Ryan, a celebrated author who’s been twice nominated for the Booker Prize, was effusive in his praise of working in the civil service in an interview with The Brendan O’Connor Show on RTÉ Radio 1 last weekend.

“I loved it,” said Ryan, who started out as a clerical officer at the age of 22 at the National Employment Rights Authority, now part of the Workplace Relations Commission, and now has a day job as a lecturer in creative writing at the University of Limerick.
