The fictional detective Sherlock Holmes once solved a murder because a dog didn’t bark in the night-time. That’s how we measure the damage being done by Donald Trump’s tariffs. It’s the investments that are not happening, the jobs that are not being created, the deals that are not being done, the money that is not being spent.

The uncertainty started with Trump’s inauguration last January, when he vowed to “tariff and tax foreign countries to enrich our citizens”.
