It’s a bit like the football transfer market, agrees Eavan Saunders, the Dublin boss of Dentons, one of the biggest law firms in the world. To increase its size in Ireland, she has been poaching solicitors from rival companies, offering them better pay or prospects.

“I’ve been ambitious about who I’ve wanted to hire, and an awful lot of them need to be chivvied out,” she says. “They’re in a safe harbour, so there’s work in that.”
