We’re flying out of Pakistan’s airspace, and the waves are breaking 11,000 metres below us in the Gulf of Oman, along a desolate coastline.

It’s a world away from the verdant hills and vineyards of Italy’s renowned Valpolicella wine-making region, but I’ll explain why that’s relevant later.
