During the Great Famine, The Economist magazine reckoned all the hunger and suffering was the Irish people’s fault, “brought on by their own wickedness and folly”.
In January 1847, the British publication wrote that the Irish population was being reduced “by acts for which they are chiefly to blame… a sole reliance on the precarious crop of potatoes.”
