New apartment standards will save much less than the Government has stated and are unlikely to spark the building boom that it hopes, an experienced construction expert has told the Sunday Independent.

The changes to apartment standards will see average construction savings on the building of an apartment unit in a typical development of between €22,000 and €30,000, according to a high-level analysis undertaken by Paul Mitchell of construction consultancy Mitchell McDermott.
