Magnus Llewellin, editor of The Times and Sunday Times Scotland, is leaving the titles and is expected to take time out before deciding on his future.
Those attending the recent Press Lunch in Glasgow were made aware that Llewellin would be departing and the 59-year-old has confirmed to staff that he will leave at the end of June.
In a statement, News Scotland said: “We can confirm that Magnus Llewellin has decided to step down as editor of The Times and The Sunday Times Scotland after eight years.
“David McCann, currently deputy editor, will step up as acting editor and further announcements will be made in due course.”
News Scotland MD Richard Bogie added: “I would like to thank Magnus for his exceptional leadership, for guiding his team through the challenges posed by Covid and for spearheading our digital transformation in Scotland.
“He leaves The Times and The Sunday Times Scotland with strong readership, healthy subscription numbers and thriving commercial partnerships.”
Llewellin began his career at the Edinburgh Evening News in 1990 and held senior editorial positions at The Daily Record, The Scotsman and the short-lived Business AM.
He rose through the ranks at The Herald, becoming editor-in-chief of the Herald & Times.
He joined The Times as Scotland editor in 2016 and in 2023 he also took on responsibility for The Sunday Times Scotland.
Llewellin’s departure follows the exit of other senior figures from the titles, including Mark Macaskill, who was deputy editor at The Sunday Times Scotland, Michael Glackin, Sunday Times Scotland business editor, features writer Mike Wade, and sports writer Douglas Alexander.
The company is currently advertising for a news editor.
