Chirp. Chirp. Chirp. The smoke alarm on my living-room ceiling chirped every 40 seconds throughout the entire St Patrick’s bank holiday weekend.

I’d spent most of that weekend wearing noise-cancelling headphones and frantically googling “how to fix a smoke detector” while my compatriots were out drowning the shamrock.
