NCIMB, an Aberdeen-based microbiology services provider, has secured new funding to strengthen its business development and marketing functions.

The £1.7m investment is from the Investment Fund for Scotland, managed by Maven Capital Partners, and the Scottish National Investment Bank.

The Maven team were first introduced to NCIMB at an IFS Roadshow in Aberdeen, hosted by the British Business Bank.

NCIMB is the owner of the UK’s largest industrial, food and marine bacterial culture collection. It provides microbial identification, testing and safe storage services and supplies bacterial stains from its globally recognised collection for commercial and academic use.

The business services customers operating in a number of industries, including pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, food & drink, energy, and environmental sectors, from its state-of-the-art laboratory facility in Aberdeen.

Edward Green, chief executive, said: “The funding is transformational for the business, allowing us to scale in the Northeast of Scotland and better support our customer’s needs in life sciences.”

Cataract pioneer raises funds

Edinburgh Biosciences, the Edinburgh-based company behind Revisyon — a revolutionary non-surgical cataract treatment — has secured a £2.3m loan investment from Contamac ahead of its commercial launch.

Designed for delivery by optometrists, Revisyon aims to move cataract treatment from the operating theatre to the high street, dramatically shortening the care pathway for millions of patients.

Following successful clinical trials and a presentation at the LSX World Congress, the company expects to secure UKCA approval by the end of the year.

It was developed from the groundbreaking work of the late Prof Desmond Smith, using targeted light to reverse cataract clouding, offering a completely non-invasive solution.
