Food supplier fails with 71 staff made redundant

Localist supplied a range of retailers

A Scottish wholesale food supplier has fallen into liquidation with the loss of 71 jobs after piling up debts of more than £5 million.

Liquidators were appointed by Hamilton Sheriff Court after a petition lodged by Enterprise Foods, which traded as Localist.

The company, based on the Scottish Enterprise Technology Park in East Kilbride, was established in 1994 as Food From Scotland and delivered more than 4,000 products nationwide every week.

It had begun to struggle with cash flow resulting from the failure of a number of customers. This was made worse by challenging market conditions in the retail and hospitality sectors.

A spokesman for the liquidator said: “The directors had made efforts to restructure the debt of the company in order to save the business and rescue the jobs, and the loss of the jobs was sadly inevitable when this was not successful.

“There are many small suppliers to the business that are owed money, and the loss of this route to market will also have a serious knock-on effect to these food producers as well.”
