The study also examined workers receiving sub-minimum wage rates. An employee aged 18 is entitled to 80pc of the full adult minimum wage rate, while a 19-year-old can earn 90pc
In 2019, fewer than 20pc of employees under 20 were paid a sub-minimum rate. By 2025 this had risen to 30pc.
Minimum wage increases in Ireland between 2016 and 2025 did not lead to higher job losses among low-paid workers, according to research from the Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI).
The study, funded by the Low Pay Commission, looked at whether employees on the minimum wage were more likely to become unemployed in the six months after getting an increase. It found no evidence that rises in the minimum wage increased the likelihood of job losses.
