While the erratic nature of Trump’s tariffs leaves open the possibility of a trade war, Ireland is coming into the fray from a position of strength

The precarious position of Ireland’s jobs market became abundantly clear in early April, when Taoiseach Micheál Martin called for calm not even 24 hours after Donald Trump announced tariffs on EU goods entering the US.
Some European Union members had immediately expressed a desire to strike back, targeting US sectors like banking and big tech – big employers in Ireland. But this was not the Irish position. Our strong labour market is built on the strength of US investment we have attracted – something much of Europe has long been envious of.
