The meeting between UK prime minister Keir Starmer and the EU’s top officials comes amid much talk of a re-set in Britain’s relationship with Europe. However, in a throwback to pre-Brexit days, the two sides look set to argue over fishing rights and checks on food.
With Canada holding the presidency of the G7, its minister for finance, François-Philippe Champagne, and the governor of the Bank of Canada, Tiff Macklem, will co-host finance ministers and central bank governors in Alberta from tomorrow. The other G7 members are France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK and US, and the EU will also be there.
Back home Peter Burke, the enterprise minister, will launch Ireland’s National Strategy for the Semiconductor Sector in Cork today. We’re told that it sets out a national vision to strengthen our position in the global semiconductor value chain, outlining priorities for investment, innovation, skills, and international collaboration.
The Irish Postmasters’ Union will launch a new report by Grant Thornton on Wednesday, highlighting the “urgent” need for continued government support to secure Ireland’s post office network. It said: “With the existing funding agreement set to expire, the report urges immediate government action and recommends an annual investment of €15m for five years – less than €3 per citizen per year – to prevent potential closures.”
On Wednesday, Ibec will launch a new campaign on competitiveness and productivity, and will publish the first in a series of policy papers highlighting its solutions for a number of areas including infrastructure, energy, innovation and digitisation.
On Thursday, Startup Network Europe host three events, including The Irish Start-up Conference at Trinity College Dublin, with 500 start-up founders, CXOs and investors from across Ireland.
This week the Central Statistics Office will have data on residential property prices, and on inflation. Eurostat – the EU’s statistics office – will also release a flash estimate of GDP and employment for the EU and euro area on Thursday.
Watch out for a trading update from Diageo today, and Ryanair will have an FY25 earnings release, with a conference call Q&A hosted by chief executive Michael O’Leary and Neil Sorahan, the CFO. Flutter has Q1/25 results tomorrow. Bank of Ireland and Glenveagh will both hold their AGM on Thursday.
