You wouldn’t kick a robot dog… so is it so far-fetched to talk about rights for AI?

The European Parliament has already considered a basic rule of ‘personhood’ for an intelligent robot, so rights may only be a matter of time

Are we at the point of no return with AI? And could it even start attracting rights under our law?

On Tuesday, Google’s Nobel Prize-winning head of AI, Demis Hassabis, unveiled a slew of new AI features available to regular Google users. They included AI-powered smart glasses, shopping, enhanced video, image and music generation and a new level of ‘agentic’ AI, where stuff is done for your automatically, or on your behalf, once Google knows who you are.
