Restaurateur wins outdoor dining extension for city

Tony Crolla: a positive step forward

A victory for a local restaurateur will provide some extra outdoor relaxation time for Edinburgh’s diners.

The city council has agreed to a one-year trial allowing cafes and restaurants to set up outdoor furniture from 7.30am until 10pm. They were previously restricted to between 9am and 9pm.

Restaurateur Tony Crolla, chairman of the Vittoria Group, had publicly criticised the restrictions earlier this year after council officers reprimanded his venues for setting up too early or leaving furniture out overnight.

Mr Crolla called for more practical, business-friendly policies to support Edinburgh’s evolving café culture.

Commenting the new ruling, he said: “The council’s decision to extend outdoor dining permits from 1 July, just ahead of the busy summer and Fringe season, is a hugely positive step forward for Edinburgh’s hospitality sector.

“A one-year trial shows there’s now a willingness to be more flexible and responsive to the needs of businesses. Following my recent meeting with Gareth Barwell at The City of Edinburgh Council, it’s clear there’s a growing understanding that collaboration is the way forward.

“I want to thank Gareth for his openness and support. His leadership in this space is helping rebuild trust and strengthen Edinburgh’s standing as a world-class destination.

“This decision gives our sector the momentum it needs and shows what’s possible when honest conversations lead to real action. We look forward to welcoming al fresco diners at Brunswick Book Club this summer and other Vittoria Group venues across the city.”

The Vittoria Group is one of the capital’s most established hospitality operators, with a portfolio of popular venues including Vittoria on The Walk, Vittoria on The Bridge, Divino Enoteca, Taste of Italy, Bertie’s Proper Fish & Chips, Landy’s and the recently launched Brunswick Book Club.
