According to most recent figures, 2.44 million people in Ireland have private health insurance, with the average policy costing up to €1,600 each year.
But while faster access to treatment and a more comfortable hospital stay is reason enough for the majority of policyholders to continue paying hefty premiums, some people believe it’s not financially sound to hand over money each month on the off-chance they might need to use it in the future.
