In 1984 I went to Coláiste na Rinne in Co Waterford for sixth class – it was tough but I loved it too. A load of guys from St Conleth’s in Ballsbridge went. It was such a contrast, with our “West Brit” accents, suddenly we were among proper country folk. It was an amazing experience and gave me a grá for languages.
Clongowes after that felt like a five-star hotel. I think the heated pool may have been the first in the country and was there when Joyce went there.
