Dear Vicki: Am I legally allowed to make a woman redundant while she is on maternity leave?

The process to make someone on maternity leave redundant from a job is tightly regulated. Photo posed

Q – As the owner of food distribution company which has been badly hit by all the uncertainty over tariffs, I simply have to let about a quarter of the workforce go, and I have a business case to support that.

Unfortunately, one of the roles that has to be made redundant is held by a woman on maternity leave. Of course, the redundancy has absolutely nothing to do with her being pregnant, it’s simply that there isn’t enough work for that particular division.
