Charlie Miller, hairdresser to the stars, has died at the age of 80 in a care home in Edinburgh following a number of years suffering from Alzheimer’s disease.
He leaves a widow and two sons as well as his eponymous Charlie Miller salons, four of which continue to trade around the city, employing 80 staff.
Mr Miller, who had four grandchildren, began his trade at the age of 15 in Edinburgh’s West Port and rose to become stylist to many A-list celebrities, including Sir Sean Connery.
He was a three-time Scottish Hairdresser of the Year, Avant-Garde Hairdresser of the Year, and had two nominations for British Hairdresser of the Year.
He was the first Scottish hairdresser to receive an OBE for services to hairdressing, presented by the late Queen Elizabeth 11 in 2012, and was a judge in international competitions.
Among his close friends was the tyre tycoon Sir Tom Farmer who died just a few weeks ago.
In 2007, he began personally styling real-hair wigs for teenagers through the Teenage Cancer Trust and was instrumental in launching the ‘Hair 4 U’ initiative in Scotland, now operated by The Little Princess Trust.
He died on Monday at Queen’s Manor Care Home.
