‘We need our Seán Lemass moment if this Government wants to position Ireland for the decades ahead,’ says journalist-turned-CEO Martina Fitzgerald

The Scale Ireland chief executive who advocates for start-ups says we need to focus just as much on indigenous firms as we do on FDI

Journalist to chief executive is not a typical career path, but it’s the one taken by Martina Fitzgerald, formerly a political correspondent with RTÉ, now the boss of Scale Ireland, a not-for-profit that represents tech start-ups.

From the village of Kilskyre in Co Meath, Fitzgerald does not have a business background, she happily admits. Her father was a farmer, while her mother ran a shop, which helped to pay the bills and “put four of us through college”. A degree in politics and history from UCD in Martina’s case.
