When Maeve Flanagan’s father was diagnosed with dementia in 2022, the family assumed they could manage everything privately. With a joint pension account and nearly 50 years of marriage behind her parents, Flanagan believed her mother would automatically be able to make financial and care decisions.

But when her father’s condition worsened and he required residential care, they hit an unexpected legal roadblock.
