I’d happily keep buttering bread and peeling mandarins every evening if that was the price of proper, affordable after-school care.
The hot-meal scheme won’t start in the 350 new schools until the Government’s procurement department has ensured that no stray chicken nugget sneaks its way on to a plate. But what most parents want isn’t a free lunch. It’s the chance to work full hours, bring in a proper wage and, if the stars align, put aside enough to buy a home.
