Dear Vicki: As the owner of a small firm with no HR staff, how do I deal with alleged bullying?

It is important to support colleagues and address any allegations thoroughly

Q: I am the owner of an SME and one of my staff has told me they are struggling with anxiety following a work-related bullying incident. It seems that they were shouted at by a colleague, in what sounds like an unpleasant incident that was witnessed by colleagues.

While I believe their experience is genuine, there is probably important context that I will need to understand fully before taking any action. As a small company, of course I don’t have the luxury of a HR department. So I have to handle this myself – investigate the incident thoroughly, deal with the staff member who is suffering anxiety, and make sure the whole team doesn’t become unsettled by what has happened.
