Tensions are building in Europe over the proposals to monitor for illegal content like child abuse imagery

In an Irish Independent interview last week, Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales raged against new EU rules on hate speech. But while I interrogated him sternly on those views, many might agree with his position on what he calls a “disastrous” proposed EU law that would give gardaí and others access to our WhatsApps and text messages if they believe they need such access to fight crime.

The EU regulation, known commonly as the ‘Chat Control’ law, would require online platforms and messaging services such as WhatsApp to install scanning technology to monitor for illegal content. The initiative is on the table as a method to combat child sexual abuse material (CSAM).
