Celtic AGM abandoned amid fan protests

Target: Peter Lawwell

Celtic have criticised supporters after the club’s AGM at Parkhead was abandoned amid protests from fans.

The highly-anticipated meeting lasted barely half-an-hour before chairman Peter Lawwell felt compelled to bring it to an end.

Celtic fans have been voicing their anger at the board during matches for a number of months and the club hierarchy were once again in the firing line in the Kerrydale Suite.

Red cards and a chorus of boos rang out as Lawwell, CEO Michael Nicholson and Ross Desmond, representing his absent father, majority stakeholder Dermot, took to the top table.

Following a lengthy adjournment, the officials returned only to be subjected to further protests and chants from the floor during Ross Desmond’s address, with Lawwell closing the meeting without votes on any resolutions or a Q&A session.

A club statement said: “Regrettably, due to the continuing disruptive conduct of a small number of individuals preventing the orderly management of today’s AGM, we were required to conclude the meeting earlier than we had planned.

“Such conduct is completely unacceptable and hugely disappointing, and while today’s events are completely outwith our control, clearly we regret the impact on our shareholders who were deprived of the opportunity to take part in an orderly and constructive meeting.

“Chairman Peter Lawwell called a poll on the resolutions at the end of the meeting, the results of which will be made available once counted and verified by our registrar, Computershare.”
