Government told its overspending is making country ‘vulnerable’

The Government has been accused of “budgeting like there’s no tomorrow” by an independent watchdog after it failed to provide forecasts beyond 2026 in last month’s budget.

“It is as if 2027 doesn’t exist,” said Seamus Coffey, chairperson of the Irish Fiscal Advisory Council (Ifac). “Good planning and budgeting require forecasts that go more than 15 months ahead.”
