Bike theft is big business – here’s how to ensure you’re not left out of pocket

Up to 20,000 bikes are stolen each year – some are crimes of opportunity, some professional to sell on the black market

During the Covid era, cycling as an exercise got a huge uptick with many sticking to the sport after and more and more cycle paths being added each year. Stock image: Getty

When my husband’s expensive racing bike was stolen last year, we were in no doubt it was to order. This was no opportunistic crime. From a locked shed, with the second (lesser value) bike and everything else left behind, it was taken in the middle of the night, over a high, secured, gate. Two people at least would have been needed.

He had likely been followed home and the theft planned. That, of course, is worrying for all sorts of reasons.
