An Post confirms up to 300 new postal delivery positions

The frontline delivery roles will be filled nationwide as the company moves to increase capacity in its national parcel network amid sustained growth in online shopping.

The recruitment drive follows a sharp rise in parcel traffic last year. According to An Post, overall parcel volumes last year were 27pc higher than in 2024.

In the run-up to Christmas, An Post said it was delivering three million parcels every week as online demand peaked.

That momentum seemed to continue this year. Parcel volumes in January and February were almost 50pc higher than in the same period last year, An Post said.

To cope with the increase, An Post opened a new parcel processing facility at Cheeverstown in Dublin 24.

The site will be automated over the coming months and is expected to be fully ready in time for this year’s peak season, An Post said.

With burgeoning e-commerce growth, capacity is the major issue

The additional 300 delivery staff are intended to strengthen so-called “last mile” capacity – the final stage of getting parcels from a depot to a customer’s door.

The company said this expansion will support operations until a major new parcels site for Ireland is opened at the end of the decade.

Chief executive David McRedmond said the scale of online growth is reshaping the business.

“With burgeoning e-commerce growth, capacity is the major issue for An Post. Three hundred additional frontline delivery staff will increase capacity in the ‘last mile’, while additional processing at Cheeverstown will provide ‘middle mile’ capacity until a major new parcels site for Ireland is opened at the end of the decade,” he said.

“Meanwhile, we continue to target efficiencies in non-frontline areas, through process redesign and technology.

“An Post’s Greenlight strategy has delivered positive results for 2025; and the growth in 2026 shows the seismic impact of online on global trade. Parcel network capacity is an essential infrastructure for the State, allowing people and businesses to locate and operate anywhere.”

Separately, the company said its full-year 2025 results will be announced in the second quarter.

An Post said it is expected to show growth in revenue, earnings, cash and profit compared with 2024.
