Picture this: you’re on a coffee break with a colleague with whom you’ve worked alongside for years. You have a lingering suspicion that you’re paid less than them – despite being in the sale role and having similar seniority and qualifications – so you ask them how much they’re earning.
At best, you’ll be given the standard coy Irish response: “sure the guards wouldn’t ask me that”. At worst, your colleague reacts as if you’d inquired about his bowel movements and now he’s marching straight to HR.
