US Justice Department lawyers defended president Donald Trump’s authority to unilaterally impose global tariffs during a high stakes appeals court hearing yesterday, a day before another round of levies against many countries kick in.
In a hearing in Washington, lawyers for the government squared off with attorneys from a group of states and small businesses who sued to block the levies, claiming Mr Trump wrongfully invoked an emergency law to justify them.
