Richard Curran: Toughest sell for Paschal and Jack’s budget was explaining how bad things were without mentioning who had made them so bad

The barrage of tough post-budget questions for Paschal and Jack from the public on RTÉ radio on Wednesday told its own story. Inevitably there will be people who are unhappy with what is in any budget, but it was clear this was either the wrong budget messaging or the wrong budget.

Both ministers – for finance Paschal Donohoe – and public expenditure Jack Chambers, made salient points in trying to explain the thinking behind the choices in Budget 2026, but so many of them failed to land.
