Adrian Weckler: If AI has only one positive effect, it’ll be a new focus on power generation

The amount of electricity AI uses is huge – so chances are we’re soon going to have lots of it

If AI really does turn out to be a hyped-up bubble that is used less than forecast, it may still have one unusual side-benefit for society – more power generation for decades to come.

Right now, there’s a massive crunch on electricity grids due to AI-addled data centres. We don’t have nearly enough energy and haven’t planned for it.
