With everyone so obsessed about whether “Paschal’s billions” from corporation tax will keep rolling in, it is easy to overlook what’s happening elsewhere.

One worrying figure that came through during the week was in services jobs. According to AIB’s purchasing managers’ index, job numbers actually shrank in August in four sub-­categories of the services sector, for the first time since 2020.
