Mediahuis group has confirmed it now has a million digital subscribers, putting it in the front rank among Europe’s news and media providers.

The record high number of paid digital subscribers was described as “an incredible milestone” by Mediahuis group CEO Gert Ysebaert, in a message to staff in the five countries where the business now publishes.

In Ireland, the Antwerp-headquartered group owns news titles including the Irish Independent, Sunday World and Belfast Telegraph, as well as local papers and digital brands Carzone.ie and Switcher.ie.

Mediahuis Ireland titles surpassed 100,000 digital subscribers earlier this year.

The Mediahuis group was created in 2014 as a joint venture between Belgian publishing groups Corelio and Concentra.

Since then the business has expanded into the Dutch, Irish, Luxembourg and German markets with a mix of established news brands – including Belgium’s De Standaard and NRC in the Netherlands – as well as newer digital titles such as European affairs news site Euractiv.

As well as one million digital subscribers, the group has 800,000 print subscribers but has strategically focused its future growth plans to online.

In his message to staff, Mr Ysebaert said: “One million is not just a number, it shows that our transformation is working.”
