Ireland’s scam text blocking plan deferred as regulator tries to fix technical issues

The anti-scam text initiative, which applies to SMS messages that use company or institution names, has been beset by problems since it was launched in July

The telecoms regulator is to delay the blocking of scam texts because the anti-fraud system it set up still isn’t fully working.

Comreg said today that it will “defer’ the blocking mechanism for fear that it would prevent legitimate texts such as those from hospitals or other sensitive service providers.
